Native Chicken Collagen Type II

Several studies have shown that oral intake of low doses of native chicken collagen type II has positive effects in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.

Application in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Several studies have shown that oral intake of low doses of native chicken collagen have positive effects on symptoms such as joint swelling and joint paint in patients with RA, strongly indicating a dampening of the chronic inflammation present in these patients (Barnett, Combitchi and Trentham, 1996; Barnett et al., 1998). The mechanism of action is thought to be by oral tolerance. Oral tolerance is initiated, when an antigen, in this case native chicken collagen type II, passes through the gut and the gut-associated-lymphoid-tissue induces systemic tolerance towards that antigen through the activation of regulatory T-cells (Weiner and Wu, 2011). Additionally, a recent study indicates that the joint pain of OA can be relieved by oral intake of native chicken collagen type II (Bakilan et al., 2016).

Low daily dose for effective treatment

To initiate the oral tolerance mechanism and provide effective treatment opportunity for patients with joint paint a dose of maximum 40 mg a day* is recommended.

Storage and Stability

BIOFAC’s Native Chicken Collagen Type II should be stored in original and tightly closed containers at room temperature (not exceeding 25 °C). Retest date is 2 years from date of production, if stored as advised. 

All products are primarily packed in food approved-, light- and airtight aluminum bags followed by fiber drums. 

A special lenient manufacturing process does not involve boiling or extensive hydrolysis to retain native and undenaturated 3-dimensial structure of type II collagen.

The most prevalent type of cartilage in human body is Hyaline cartilage and is present at the joints where it forms an elastic tissue protecting the bones and reducing friction when the body is in motion.
The most abundant protein (80-90 %) in hyaline cartilage is type II collagen making it an interesting target of research in the fields of RA and OA.
Native type II collagen consists of a triple- helical structure of three interconnected (cross-linked) collagen fibers. The studies suggest that the native three-dimensional structure might play an important role in initiating a mechanism of oral tolerance resulting in positive effect for patients with RA and OA.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) the joints and hyaline cartilage is attacked by the patient’s own immune system, making RA an autoimmune disease. In Osteoarthritis (OA) the joints and hyaline cartilage is broken down due to high levels of joint stress, which could be caused by overweight, previous injuries or jobs involving heavy labour.

BIOFAC Native Chicken Collagen type II is a fine white to yellowish powder with standardized properties. The standard grade is a rich cocktail of min 3% undenaturated collagen type II, minimum 20 % Chondroitin Sulfate and glycosaminoglycan. Our flexible production line allows us to produce Native Chicken Collagen Type II according to customer specifications.

BIOFAC Native type II collagen is obtained from the breast bone (sternum) of chickens. To ensure highest quality and safety standards, we produce Chicken Collagen type II at our GMP certified factory located in Denmark. The raw material – chicken sternum cartilage – originates exclusively from veterinary controlled slaughterhouses, ensuring full traceability and compliance with highest veterinary and quality assurance standards.

    on Differential Environmental Review and assessed that BIOFAC is classified as Category 1 (the best category) because
    of the high level of systematism and high level of regulatory compliance.

  • Danish Working Environment Authority has assigned BIOFAC with a green Smiley, indicating that BIOFAC
    has no issues with the Working Environment Authority, providing a high level of health and safety.
